Dear Friends,
Many of you will know that Batu Batu has funded marine conservation work particularly around endangered sea turtles and their habitats, since we opened in 2012. To date, guest stays have contributed to the protection and release of over 17,500 endangered sea turtle hatchlings as well as the surveying, mapping and cleaning of 1 million square metres of coral reef, and removal of 23 tonnes of marine debris from the ocean and nearby beaches.
In 2019, we set-up Tengah Island Conservation (TIC), an independent, not-for-profit organisation registered with the Malaysian Registrar of Societies so that the team's biodiversity projects could continue to grow beyond the resort. TIC began 2020 on a high with a team of five conservation biologists based on Pulau Tengah.
Today however, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Batu Batu is closed and sadly, can no longer fund TIC's work in the immediate near future.
But we still very much believe in TIC and what they do. In fact, it is now more important than ever. Covid-19 has tremendously impacted Mersing's tourism-dependent community. Because TIC has always actively engaged with the local communities, it plays an important part in working with local stakeholders to re-build tourism consciously for the benefits of both biodiversity, and the communities.
So today, I am appealing to you for a little support — to contribute just a little something and share this campaign so that TIC's important work can continue whilst we weather this storm together.
RM 100 (US$ 23) will fund the protection of one endangered sea turtle hatchling and its habitat. Our target fundraising amount of RM 400,000 or (US$ 93,000) will allow the next twelve months of critical work to continue. Please consider supporting this incredible project by following the link to TIC’s Give Asia fundraising page.
Every little bit helps and we hope we can reach the target together. Thank you very much for your support.
We hope the day will come soon when we can welcome you back to our beautiful island home.
Cher (Co-founder, Batu Batu - Tengah Island & Tengah Island Conservation)
