Batu BatU - TENGAH Island
Batu Batu, set in the protected Johor Marine Park is an unspoilt island retreat where a deep respect for nature is at the core of everything we do. We strongly believe that private sector tourism can act as a catalyst for positive change through the preservation and regeneration of the rich but fragile biodiversity around our amazing island and beyond.
About Batu Batu
Meaning “rocks” in the local Malay language, Batu Batu is a rustic island retreat set amongst coconut groves, rocky outcrops and fine sand beaches on the uninhabited island of Pulau Tengah off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia.
Constructed by local carpenters with a variety of tropical hardwoods using traditional techniques in the Malay vernacular style, the 20 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom villas are nestled into the island’s wild and natural environment in a way reminiscent of a Malay ‘kampung’ or village.
Lazy sun-kissed days can be spent exploring the island’s eight white sand beaches, striding through the jungle or learning about our fragile ecosystems from the TIC on-site biologists. Kayaks and paddle boards tempt guests out into the big blue, whilst those wanting to explore the coral kingdoms of the South China Sea can don a snorkel and mask and step right off the beach.
Batu Batu aims to tread lightly, source sustainably, behave responsibly and support the local economy wherever possible. To read more about our conservation initiatives, please click here.

KakakTua is our little sister in Mersing town, a coffee shop and guesthouse with a purpose. It is not only a café which that serves good coffee and yummy wholesome cakes, but also a space for the community to run and attend programmes and events. A space to develop community-led tourism, a space to pull together the history of Mersing town and collect the stories of the community. A human space for meaningful interactions and engagement.
Batu Batu Resort and Tengah Island Conservation (TIC) were jointly awarded Silver in the Best for Wildlife & Nature Conservation category at the prestigious World Travel Mart (WTM) World Responsible Tourism Awards 2019 held in London, United Kingdom.
